You can't beat experience

Over the 25 years that I've been a gas engineer, I have probably worked on every manufacturers boilers and models around.

And when it comes down to knowledge on how to service and repair these boilers, there really is no substitute for experience, every boiler has it's weak points, it's poor design, the odd dodgy component that's vulnerable to wear and tear and that will break down easily due to a particular component being neglected, I've learned most of the tell-tell signs of potential faults and risks of a near-future failure with many different boilers.

I do consider myself to be an expert at fixing boilers, there isn't any guess work involved, I can accurately diagnose a fault and then do the relivent dead test using resistance to confirm my prognosis. Most gas engineers are merely boiler installers, they couldn't tell the difference between a negative temperature coefficient thermistor to a to a high limit stat, or hall effect sensor to a low pressure switch, a transformer to a capacitor, load compensation to weather compensation.

So if you have a heating or boiler failure over the winter, there really is no need to buy a new boiler because your current gas fitter can't fix it, it's probably the case that they are incompetent and require further experience and training at fault diagnostics and repairs.
