Which Smart Thermostat?

This is my quick opinion of the current smart wifi single zone thermostats on the market today.

I'm sorry to say that I haven’t included Hive, it currently only offers TPI which is older technology, it only has on/off protocol, it doesn’t support OpenTherm, there are limited advantages with installing hive thermostats as they can easily overshoot and overheat your house, it can not modulate the boilers flow temperature, hive has however added the ability to switch on Optimisation, so at least it’s boiler plus compliant now.

I'm happy to say that the Nest has OpenTherm compatibility and if your boiler has the OpenTherm communication Protocol then this is the Smart thermostat for you, this product looks really good, but the best thing is it can modulate the boilers flow temperature, meaning it can lower the burner down as it approaches the set room temperature, meaning the boiler cycles less, meaning it's more efficient, meaning you save money.

The only time I wouldn't recommend the Nest is when a boiler manufacturer uses a different digital communication protocol and have their own proprietary smart wifi thermostat, like the Wave for Worcester which doesn't have OpenTherm, but has EMS bus, or the vSmart for Vaillant which also doesn't have OpenTherm, but has ebus.

And some boiler manufacturers that do support Opentherm have their own Stats that are the better option over the nest, Like the Vokera BeSmart or the Navien (own bus) Smart TOK, which both have additional functions, like displaying the boiler fault codes and the ability to set the boiler temperature , hot water temperature and room temperature from within the app.

If you're looking for a multi zone control system, I personally rate the Salus IT600 Smart Home system over the more popular and more expensive honeywell evohome, there are a few more multizone smart trv systems, but none that are as comprehensive with lights, sockets, pir sensors, smoke alarms, water leak sensors, door sensors, electricity meters, humidity sensors, smart buttons and more, all compatible with Google home and alexa, and has the one touch setting to create your own recipes and routines, and it's the most competitively priced smart home system on the market.
