Hydrogen-Ready Boilers: Are They Worth It?

Hydrogen-Ready Boilers: Are They Worth It?

As a boiler and heating engineer in Horsham, I've been getting a lot of questions about hydrogen-ready boilers lately.

The government's pushing for them, but are they the best option for homeowners?

The truth is, while the government is aiming to start blending hydrogen into the gas network in some areas by 2025, a full switch to hydrogen is still a fair way off, likely sometime in the 2030s.

By then, your fancy new boiler might be nearing the end of its lifespan. So, what can you do in the meantime?

The good news is, there are plenty of ways to make your existing system more efficient.

1 Fit thermostatic radiator valves to all the radiators and fit a thermostatic bypass.

2 Upgrade the room thermostat to a digital smart wifi type that is more accurate.

3 Upgrade the timer to use programs and only heat the house and hot water when needed.

4 Add weather or load compensation that can directly adjust the boiler output.

5 Zone the home, have separate heating zones to only heat parts of the house in use.

6 Reduce the flow temperature and increase the radiator sizes.

7 Treat the system water, dirt and air in the system can have a significant impact on efficiency.

8 Balance the heating system to ensure even flow throughout the system.

9 Insulate pipework, hot water cylinders, storage tanks and loft spaces.

10 Draught-proof around doors and windows.

These upgrades can save you money on energy bills and extend the life of your boiler.
