How to Top Up Boiler Pressure

How to Top Up Boiler Pressure

Your boiler's water pressure should be between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the pressure drops below this, it can cause the boiler to malfunction or even shut down. In most cases, you can top up the pressure yourself without calling a heating engineer.

Here's how:

  1. Turn off the boiler. This is important to do before you start working on the boiler, as it will prevent any accidents.
  2. Locate the filling loop. The filling loop is a flexible hose with two valves on it. It is usually located underneath the boiler.
  3. Open the valves on the filling loop. Do this slowly and carefully, as you don't want to let too much water in too quickly.
  4. Check the pressure gauge. The pressure gauge is usually located on the front of the boiler. It will show you how much water pressure is in the system.
  5. Top up the pressure until it reaches 1 to 1.5 bar. You can do this by opening the valves on the filling loop a little more.
  6. Close the valves on the filling loop.
  7. Turn on the boiler.

That's it! You've now successfully topped up the pressure on your boiler.

Here are some additional tips for topping up boiler pressure:

  • Make sure that the water supply to your boiler is turned on.
  • If the pressure gauge is not working, you can use a pressure tester to check the pressure.
  • If you accidentally overfill the boiler, you can bleed the radiators to release some of the water.

If you are not comfortable topping up the pressure on your boiler yourself, or if the pressure drops frequently, it is best to call a heating engineer.

Here are some signs that you should call a heating engineer:

  • The pressure gauge is constantly dropping.
  • You see water leaking from the boiler or the pipes.
  • The boiler is making strange noises.
  • The boiler is not heating your home properly.

By following these tips, you can safely top up the pressure on your boiler yourself and avoid costly repairs.
