5 Plumbing Repairs Every UK Homeowner Should Know. Horsham

Knowing how to tackle some basic plumbing issues can save you money, time, and frustration.

Here are 5 essential plumbing repairs every UK homeowner should be familiar with:

1. Fixing a Running Toilet:

 * The Problem: A constantly running toilet wastes water and inflates your water bill.
 * The Fix:
   * Check the Flapper: The flapper is a rubber seal that prevents water from constantly flowing into the bowl. If it's worn or not sealing properly, water will continuously run.
     * To fix: Turn off the water supply to the toilet. Remove the old flapper and install a new one.
   * Check the Fill Valve: The fill valve controls the water level in the tank. If it's malfunctioning, water may continuously overflow.
     * To fix: Adjust the float level on the fill valve to stop the water at the correct level.

2. Unclogging a Sink:

 * The Problem: Slow-draining or completely blocked sinks are a common household nuisance.
 * The Fix:
   * Use a Plunger: Create a seal with the plunger over the drain opening and pump vigorously.
   * Baking Soda & Vinegar: Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of vinegar. Let it fizz for 30 minutes, then flush with hot water.

3. Replacing a Tap Washer:

 * The Problem: Leaky taps are not only annoying but also wasteful.
 * The Fix:
   * Turn off the water supply: Locate the isolation valves under the sink and turn them off.
   * Remove the tap handle: Use a screwdriver to remove the screw holding the handle in place.
   * Remove the old washer: Access the valve stem and remove the worn-out washer.
   * Install the new washer: Place the new washer onto the valve stem.
   * Reassemble the tap: Replace the handle and turn the water supply back on.

4. Clearing a Minor Drain Blockage (with a Snake):

 * The Problem: Hair, soap scum, and other debris can accumulate in drain pipes, causing slow drainage.
 * The Fix:
   * Use a plumbing snake: Insert the flexible snake into the drain opening and carefully rotate it to dislodge the blockage.
   * Caution: Avoid forcing the snake too far, as this can damage the pipes.

5. Turning Off the Main Water Supply:

 * Why it's important: Knowing how to shut off the main water supply is crucial in case of an emergency (e.g., a burst pipe) or if you need to make repairs.
 * How to do it: Locate the stopcock (the main water shut-off valve), usually near the water meter. Turn the valve clockwise to shut off the water supply.
